National Reconciliation Week

On Sunday 26 May, Australia commemorated National Sorry Day to remember the mistreatment of the country’s Aboriginal People. This week is Reconciliation Week. The date commemorates the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision, two significant events in the reconciliation journey.

This year’s theme is  ‘Grounded in Truth: Walk Together with Courage.‘

Read the questions below and then follow this link to watch the video from BTN about Reconciliation Week.

  • Explain what National Reconciliation Week is in your own words.

  • What are 2 ways you think Australia could become a more equal and accepting place? What would we need to do to achieve this?

  • Which Positive Learner Attribute has been demonstrated in this video and how was it portrayed?

Choose two of the questions to leave as a comment.

National Simultaneous Storytime

National Simultaneous Storytime (NSS) is held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places around the country.

This year it is taking place on Wednesday 22nd May, 2019 at 11am.

Alpacas with Maraccas is a story about Macca the Alpaca and his best friend Al. The two Alpacas are determined to enter the talent show and have no intention of letting their lack of talent get in the way.

Like Macca identifying his talents, leave a comment with one of your strengths and what you enjoy about it.

Grandfriends Day

To be grateful means to display deep appreciation for something done or received.

Today the students in 4T showed enormous gratitude towards our special visitors – and we had a whole lot of fun!

The Year 4s started off with an impromptu song along with our Bumble4 conductor and music teacher Mrs Summers on the deck. Click play below for a small snippet:

Then, together with our grandfriends we had to complete a sheet called figure me out where we had to think of an answer to a question. Eg. What year did you start Prep? We then had to come up with an equation for someone to solve so they could learn our answer to the question. ‘This is trickier than some of the maths I did at school!’ one of the grandfriends was overheard saying.

4T with their special visitors

We then went off to a wonderful assembly where we heard many uplifting musical items and were reminded of the importance of the special people in our life who support us, love us and who we can turn to at anytime.

Leave a comment with something that you are grateful for and why.
4T, can you also share one of your equations you created with your grandfriend.

1/4 down..3/4 to go.

In true 4T style, the end of Term 1 is near but we are nowhere yet near done. Our last week is shaping up to be a very exciting race to the finish.

  • Our school is one of the 30 schools around the world that are part of the ‘G20 Schools.’ The principals of these schools meet annually and share their country’s culture, ideas, thoughts and challenges on schooling. 2018’s theme is ‘Changing us in a Changing World,’ and for the first time, the conference is being held at our school in Melbourne! On Monday, the principals part of this group will give a special presentation about their homeland to the Junior School.

  • Later that day, 4T will put their ‘blogger’ hats on and unveil their blogs to our school community. They are expected to be able to explain the benefits of blogging, how to stay safe whilst online and show guests around their dashboard and site.

  • Showing gratitude and being thankful for all that we have is an important value. 4T will be writing letters to members of our community that have had an impact on our lives at school during Term 1.

  • Tuesday kicks off our Year 4 focus of Community Service. We will be visiting a nursing home and interacting with the residents. Check out the individual student blogs to see their recounts of the afternoon.

  • Our week will end with a very special Easter Service of Worship. All Junior School students will rotate through a range of activities including prayers and songs to celebrate the Easter Story.

What is something that you are proud of in your first 9 weeks of Year 4, and why?

What a Week!

To say that this has been a busy week in 4T would be an understatement.

This would certainly be a very long post if we tried to fill you in on EVERYTHING that we have participated in from dressing up in costumes and science lab gear, to community service, to expert speakers, to sports tryouts…PHEW!
We implore you to hop on to the individual student blogs to read what part of week 6 4T enjoyed the most.

Some of things you may read about include:

  • Book Week activities and ‘Dress Up as your Favourite character’ day.

  • Our weekly coding class with Melinda

  • Heading over to the Senior School science labs for a lesson with Dr Wetherbee about the properties of metals.

  • Community service to help raise money for the Salvation Army which 4T then used to buy toiletries from Chemist Warehouse to be donated to those in need.

  • Pulling our lab coats on and beginning to plan our own science experiments in preparation for ‘Meet the Scientist’ afternoon.

  • Athletics Trials

  • Learning about the properties of glass and glass blowing with Susan.

For someone who is interested in knowing more about one of these activities, what is some advice you wish you had beforehand?

Welcome back!

to Term 3!

The 4T students returned to school after a chilly winter break with many holiday stories. Most used the time for relaxation, catching up with friends or even escaping the cold and flying to somewhere warm.

Once again, Term 3 is packed full of many exciting learning opportunities including:

  • Weekly coding lessons with our resident expert Melinda

  • Life Ed Van

  • Science experiments

  • House and Chapel services

  • ‘Social Justice’ Day

  • Fundraising and shopping for the Salvation Army

  • ‘Design Your Own’ Experiment science project

  • Visits from science experts and using the senior school science labs

  • Tabloid Sports

  • Visit to Yarralee aged care home

  • Meet the Scientist afternoon

It would come as no surprise that 4T hit the ground running and we have already started some wonderful new topics including division, applying our knowledge of sizzling starts to persuasive writing and our new Integrated topic, ‘Material Matters.’

To kick off our science topic, we ran an experiment called the ‘Clothes Relay’ to understand the importance of conducting ‘fair tests.’ We discovered that every test, or in this case a relay has variables. Variables are the things that can change. But, to make the relay fair we had to have fixed variables. For the relay to be fair we had to make sure that there were equal amounts of clothes (including types and sizes), equal distances to run and equal amounts of team members.

Continuing along with our whole school theme of Curiosity, what are you excited to know more about this term?

Celebrating Literature Day

What an amazing celebration!

On Tuesday the entire Junior School participated in a variety of activities to celebrate all aspects of literature. From drama to writing limericks to creating our own monsters!

We were so fortunate to have Sofie Laguna speak to us about being an author. Did you know that she really wanted to be an actor? However, she found it really difficult to ‘cut the mustard’ and became a writer instead.
We loved hearing about her first story ‘My Blanket’ which was a story based on her friend when she was three years old.

  • She had some really interesting tips about writing too, she said to:
Start with something you know, like how your parents embarrass you….
  • If you have ‘writer’s block’, the best thing to do is to write anyway and you can go back and fix it up and make it better later.

We are reading Tom Appleby Convict Boy by Jacqui French, but maybe next time we should read about the character Grace she created. She read to us from the book ‘Meet Grace’ which is the first novel in the series. It’s about a young girl trying to survive in England in the 1700s. It would be super helpful for when we write our Convict Diaries.

Here is a link to her website – click on it and find out more about Sofie and her books.

The students of 4T have written a sizzling start about their favourite part of Literature Day. Have a read and see if you can identify the elements of a sizzling start that they have used.
